Friendship Sloops served the lobstermen of Maine for four decades until 1920 when competition from gasoline powered vessels forced them into retirement. However, the Friendship Sloops, unlike most other boats, did not depart the scene to exist only in history books and museum collections. They are built today as they were 60 years ago, and their popularity growns rather than diminishes. More than just fine sailboats, they are a timeless link with our past. A study of the Friendship Sloop's history reveals the enterprise and imaginative nature of the fishermen/boat builders of 19th century New England.
